Looking After Leather: A Short Routine That Works
Good leather outlasts its owner if it is kept clean, dry and conditioned. None of it takes long.
Everyday
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth after use, especially handles, which collect oils from skin.
- Keep it away from direct sun and radiators. Heat dries leather and fades colour.
- Do not overfill. Stretching is permanent.
If it gets wet
Blot, do not rub. Stuff with plain paper to hold the shape and leave to dry at room temperature. Never use a hairdryer.
Every few months
- Clean with a product made for the type of leather. Test on a hidden area first.
- Apply a small amount of conditioner with a cloth, working in circles.
- Leave it to absorb, then buff.
Suede and nubuck are different. Use a dedicated brush and avoid creams entirely.
Storage
- Use the dust bag, or a cotton pillowcase. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture.
- Stuff lightly so the bag keeps its shape.
- Store upright, with chains and straps tucked inside so they do not mark the surface.
What to leave to a professional
Ink, grease and colour transfer from denim are easy to make worse. So are repairs to edges and handles. A specialist costs less than a replacement.
